Final Roster by Anthony Saunders.

Final Roster by Anthony Saunders.

On the evening of 5th June 1944, at a dozen airfields across southern England, more than 13,000 American paratroopers prepared themselves for a mission that would change the course of history. The next morning these brave young men found themselves at the forefront of the bitter fighting to secure the right flank of the Normandy beach-head. The odds against them were huge and, if they failed, the American amphibious landings on Utah and Omaha beaches would face disaster - the destiny of the US First Army rested squarely on the shoulders of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions.

Captain Dean McCandless
*Signature Value : £15

Joining up in 1941 he was commissioned as an Officer with the 82nd Airborne Division. Serving with the 1st Battalion, 505th PIR, he made the first of four combat jumps on 9th July 1943 at Sicily during Operation Husky, and two months later jumped at Salerno. His third drop was on D-Day, landing just outside Sainte-Mere-Eglise where his unit fought successfully to capture the bridge over the Merderet River - he was the battalion communications officer. His fourth and final jump was during Operation Market Garden before moving on to fight in the Battle of the Bulge where he was wounded. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. After leaving the service in 1946 he was later called up to serve with the Medical Corps as a doctor in Korea.

Staff Sergeant Edward H Tunison
*Signature Value : £10

Entering training in August 1943 he served as a Radio Operator on a C-47 called Placid Lassie (now restored) with the same crew throughout his time in Europe. Based at RAF Fulbeck, his crew moved to RAF Aldermaston in early June 1944 to drop paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division into Cherbourg in the early hours of D-Day. He made two more trips that day, flying fuel into Normandy, operating into pre-fabricated steel forward runways, and in re-supply missions for Patton's Third US Army. In September of 1944, during Operation Market Garden, he was engaged in towing Horsa gliders carrying British troops into Eindhoven, Holland. He later flew re-supply operations into the Battle of the Bulge, towed gliders during the Rhine crossings and undertook the evacuation of wounded from all sides. He served with the 74th TCS, 434th TCC, 9th Air Force.
